Where the incoming water is reasonably soft the tank can run on its own; where it is hard, run it after a reverse osmosis stage so the RO does the bulk of the work and the resin only polishes what is left — resin lasts far longer that way. Check the output with a TDS meter and change the resin when the reading starts to climb.
