A telescopic window cleaner puts a squeegee or washer head on glass that is out of arm’s reach, without putting a ladder against the building. Working height is roughly the pole length plus your own reach, so a 4m pole covers double-storey glass and a 6m pole covers triple. Past about 6m, a water-fed pole becomes the better tool.
What reach do you actually need?
Measure from where you will stand, not from the wall. A person of average height adds roughly 2m of reach above the pole’s own length when working overhead, so the pole does not need to match the window height exactly.
- 2m pole — high interior glass, stairwell windows, ground-floor panes above a flowerbed you cannot step into.
- 4m pole — second-storey windows from the ground on a typical house.
- 6m pole — third-storey glass. This is the practical limit for accurate squeegee work.
- 9m pole — roughly four storeys, and best used with a water-fed brush head rather than a squeegee.
How to clean a window with a telescopic pole
The technique differs from cleaning by hand because you cannot see the blade contact the glass closely, and you have far less control over angle.
- Wet the pane with the washer sleeve, working top to bottom so dirty water runs onto glass you have not finished.
- Loosen edges and corners first — that is where dried dirt collects and where a pole is least accurate.
- Pull the squeegee in straight horizontal passes, overlapping each pass by a few centimetres.
- Wipe the blade between passes. On a pole you cannot feel a dirty blade, so wipe on a schedule rather than by feel.
- Finish the bottom edge last, where water collects.
Why a pole stops working above three storeys
Two things go wrong as the pole gets longer. It flexes, so the blade angle at the glass no longer matches the angle at your hands. And the weight at full extension makes a controlled, even pull very difficult to hold. Both get worse the further out you go, which is why almost no one squeegees above three storeys.
The alternative is a water-fed pole: purified water is pumped up through the pole to a brush head, and because the water carries almost no dissolved solids the glass is left to dry on its own with no squeegee pass at all. That removes the accuracy problem entirely.
Care and replacement
Rinse the sections after use, especially near the sea, and let them dry before collapsing the pole — grit trapped in a clamp is what wears a section. The squeegee rubber is the consumable; replace it when it starts leaving fine lines behind the stroke.
